Glencoe is within an
hour's drive from the Twin Cities, Mankato, St. Cloud and Willmar.
Commuting will be even more convenient after the reconstruction of
Highway 212, redoing the four lanes both east and west of the
city.
Glencoe residents
are attracted by the community's quality educational
opportunities, excellent health care facilities and numerous
recreational amenities. The community was named
for Glencoe, Scotland.
In the early 1990s, Glencoe's population numbered around
4,500. Today, the population is nearly 5,600 and growing. New
residents continue to move into Glencoe's existing neighborhoods
and new subdivisions, including Willow Pond Estates in the central
area of the city, North Country Estates in the northwest corner
and Panther Heights in northeast Glencoe.
New Field House connected with the Glencoe-Silver Lake School District
that provides swimming, basketball, soccer, track, tennis, football,
baseball and many other sporting activities. New water park in town
attracts many surrounding communities and offer water slides, and a
children's water fountain for enjoyment. Along with a large park nestled
in the trees along the Buffalo Creek and supports a nature reserve of
ducks, geese, deer and elk.
Glencoe Regional Health Services (GRHS), affiliated with Methodist
Hospital in St. Louis Park, employs about 440 people and operates a 49-bed
hospital facility. GRHS also runs a long-term care facility and Orchard
Estates, a 40-unit housing facility for senior citizens.
The Glencoe and Silver Lake school districts completed a smooth and
successful consolidation in 1996. GSL students in 9th - 12th grade attend
GSL High School in Glencoe. GSL students in 7th and 8th grade attend GSL
Lakeside School in Silver Lake. Both communities maintain their own
elementary schools.
Glencoe's airport is now known as the Vernon F. Perschau Field. It is the
closest paved runway west of Flying Cloud and the metro area. It is used
on a daily basis.
Glencoe Days is the annual community festival that is held during the
second weekend of June. Events take place Friday through Sunday at Oak
Leaf Park. One of the highlights of the weekend is the parade that is held
on Sunday afternoon. There are food, events, and entertainment for
everyone.
